History

The first documented mention took place in the 8 century (790) in the “Congestum Arnonis”. At that time the whole area was owned by the archbishop. In 1141 the place, which belonged to the monastery of St.Peter is named “Fuschilsee” in a document from Archbishop Konrad I. In the 15th century the village Fuschl came into being. The first road to the village Hof was built at the south side of the lake in the 16th century.

Castl Fuschl, a four-story castle tower with outbuildings, located on a peninsula at the western end of Lake Fuschl, was constructed by the Salzburg Prince-bishop Sigmund I von Gleink-Volkerstorf and cardinal Burkhard von Weißpriach around 1461 as hunting lodge. 1593 Archbishop Wolf Dietrich had the castle extensively restored and, among other things, installed water pipes. Records from 1624 show a large pompous hunt organized by Paris count of Lodron. In the castle lived only the archbishop and his entourage. In 1704 the manor housewas converted into an apartment for the hunter. All windows were glazed in 1762. In 1816 the castle became the property of the Austrain Empire and was administered by the Hallein Salinenamt, where upon it fell into disrepair because it was the residence of the foresters and was not maintained. In 1833 it was auctioned, but since nobody wanted to buy it, it was initially leased 1851.In 1864 it was purchased by shipmaster Michael Fink and subsequently changed hands serval times. 1929 it belonged to Gustav and Hedwig Edle von Remitz, who had the building completly renovated by Julius Kubick. The owners were expropriated in 1939 Holocaust, the building was confiscated by the Gestapo and Gustav Edler von Remiz was deported to concentration camp Dachau and died there in August 1939. In 1945, an US American soldier`s home was set up in the castle. 1947 the restitution was made to Hedwig von Remiz, who converted the castle into a hotel. Countess von Walderdorff ran the castle hotel as tenant form 1954 on. It was filming location and backdrop for the famous “Sissi” films with Romy Schneider and Karlheinz Böhm in the years 1955 -1957.  From 1958 until 1974 it belonged to Carl Adolf Vogel and Winnie Markus, who converted and redesigned it to a first class hotel, which hosted many famous guests like Ava Gardner, Andrey Hepburn, Roger Moore, James Cameron, Magret Thatcher, Nehru, Nikita Chruschtschow, Elenor Roosevelt, Clarke Gable, Richard Nixon, Oskar Kokoschka, and many more. 1974 the castle belonged to Max Grundig and was 2004 taken over by the Schörghuber Group, which completely renovated the complex for 30 million € in between January 2005 and June 2006. The five star luxury hotel initially was part of the Luxury Collection of Starwood Hotels and Resorts, later member of the Leading Hotels of the World and since 2010 part of the Luxury Collection of Marriott. Since 2023 completly renovated and redesigned is the castle now part of Rosewood Hotels and Resorts and will be reopened in 2024. Nowadays, in addition to the castle tower and the historic outbuildings (carriage house, hunter´s house), the property also includes a boathouse with a bathing jetty, as well as an accommodation complex discreetly integrated into the slope towards the lake and modern bungalows in the Salzkammergut boathouse style. Today the building is a cultural heritage, although apart from the cellar vaults from the 16 century, some wooden beam ceilings and door frames, hardly any historical substance remains from the time of the archbishop`s hunting lodge.
